Chapter Thirty-Eight

It was just after 9PM when Agent Givens returned to the hotel. He had spent the day with Agent Williams, going over the evidence from the various crime scenes and working with local law enforcement to find Alex Shepherd.

Despite the mounting evidence against the former SWAT operator, Givens remained unconvinced. His office in New Orleans had gone to Shepherd’s house to question him, but he was nowhere to be found. His absence didn’t help Shepherd’s case, but it was circumstantial at best.

Givens and Williams could find nothing to tie Shepherd to Atlanta or its surrounding area. A search of ALPR cameras, traffic cameras, and facial recognition databases turned up nothing. As far as they could tell, at least through modern investigative methods, Shepherd had been nowhere near the area at the time of Adid’s brutal murder.

The various theories Givens and Williams had posed were still spinning around in his head as Givens swiped his room key. He tossed his jacket on the bed and went straight to the mini-fridge where he had stocked a six pack of his favorite Boston Lager. He still had to pack for his early morning flight back to New Orleans, but he needed a beer to take the edge off a long day. Everything else could wait.

Collapsing into the chair next to the bed, Givens turned on the TV and switched channels to SportsCenter. He didn’t want to think about the case anymore. The death of Adid had become more than just another body in the growing list, it was a national spectacle. No one could believe that a man with such a seemingly positive influence in easing tensions between Americans and Muslims could have been so brutally murdered. The investigation had drawn the attention of dozens of politicians, all of whom seemed to think they knew how to better investigate Adid’s death. It was incredibly frustrating.

His phone beeped on the nightstand. Givens groaned before taking a long pull of his beer. He hoped it wasn’t Williams texting him with another update. While he appreciated the former Marine’s enthusiastic attitude, his go-getter nature was getting annoying.

Givens picked up the phone and saw that he had a text from Parker. He hadn’t heard from her since the phone call about Shepherd. It was a bit of a relief to see her number. It meant she didn’t hate him. He had regretted being so terse with her on the phone. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, he thought. Pissing off the woman he’d just had a torrid affair with probably hadn’t been the best strategy.

Givens unlocked his phone and opened her message, half-hoping it was another scantily clad picture of the tight-bodied detective. The message loaded, causing Givens to nearly drop his beer as he read it.

I’m in Atlanta. We need to talk.

His face felt flush. Why in the hell had she flown to Atlanta? Was she pregnant? His mind raced through all the possibilities. None of them were good.

Meet me at Chaser’s

Givens could feel a mild panic attack starting to build.
